There are basically two types of cameras that are used to photograph weddings: 35 mm and Medium Format. 35 mm is the type of camera you may have for your personal use. It can produce good photographs if the photographer has the right equipment and is very skillful. 35 mm cameras are generally smaller than professional medium format equipment, generate smaller negatives and have less flexibility and creative control. Be sure to ask what kind of equipment the photographer uses. Medium format photography has several advantages over 35 mm for photographing weddings. First, the size of the negative film used is almost 4 times larger than 35mm. This allows your portraits to be much sharper and more detailed. Enlargements can be grainy with 35 mm film but with medium format, superior quality enlargements can be made. Log Cabin studios shoots weddings with all Medium Format equipment. Medium format equipment can be used to produce special effects with your portraits. The above photograph was done using natural light. Other questions you should ask your photographer is about their backup equipment. It's almost never necessary, but a good professional photographer will always have a backup camera ready to go. Most importantly, you should also be comfortable with the photographer's personality and style.... after all, the bride will spend more time with the photographer on her wedding day than anyone else!!
